Campaign Story

About the project

Behjam block in Lakhimpur Kheri is home to a community that depends on Chikankaari work, agricultural work, and casual labor for their livelihood. However, the ongoing pandemic has brought the economy of this community into a standstill due to lack of regular employment as well as lack of market demand for Chikankari work. Girls are affected the most as they tend to stay at home to cook food for family members and take care of young siblings. To add to it, there are no schools nearby for girls after the 8th grade. The community suffers from lack of access to education, child marriage and gender based discrimination.

Making a difference

CRY America’s Project AIM works towards sensitizing the community on children’s right to education and promoting education to improve the enrolment status of children. The project also works at reducing school dropouts through working with parents, community, school authorities, PRIs, SMC members and other relevant stakeholders. Engaging with government stakeholders to strengthen implementation of govt policies and programmes related to education is another area of work.

The way forward

● Orientation meeting of School Management Committee members in 30 target villages
● Regular orientation of community based organization (CBOs) members of 30 CBOs on right to education, gender rights and child rights
● Bi-monthly orientation sessions with parents/community on girls on the issues of importance of girls education, gender based discrimination and child marriage
● Tracking of children who are enrolled in schools, never-been to school and out of school
● Engagement with 5 primary / upper primary school authority to produce local teaching learning material in the school
● Regular engagement with stakeholders to ensure the correct teacher-student ratio at the block, district and state level

The way forward

● To ensure SMC members are sensitized
● Meetings with children groups organized on child rights issues, right to education, life skills and other govt programmes/schemes
● Sensitize parents and the community on the importance of girl child education and gender issue
● Engagement with district authorities to implement school health program
● Engagement with govt departments to ensure lineage of children in various schemes and programmes

Rafikun’s Transformation: Empowering Girls

In the impoverished Bhejam block of Lakhimpur Kheri, CRY America project is working towards inspiring young girls to seize control of their lives and the choices that shaped their destinies.

Rafikun, a girl hailing from the Sonauri village lived with her family of seven. Her father toiled as a daily wage laborer, while her mother tirelessly managed the household affairs. Despite their relentless efforts, the family struggled to make ends meet.

The team conducted transformative life skill sessions in the village. However, when the opportunity arose, Rafikun’s shyness withheld her from participating. Undeterred, the team members took it upon themselves to visit Rafikun’s house and convince her and her parents to attend the session.

Though initially apprehensive about asking questions or seeking clarification, Rafikun found herself drawn to the sessions.

As the days turned into weeks, Rafikun’s self-confidence began to flourish. With each passing session, she actively engaged in all the activities facilitated, eager to embrace newfound opportunities. She became a guiding light for her peers, motivating them to develop their self-confidence and embrace their unique identities.

Through their tireless endeavors, the team instilled a sense of self-belief in the hearts of young girls like Rafikun, enabling them to rewrite their destinies with unwavering determination and resilience.
